Safe in London

Well, I have now arrived safely on the other side of the atlantic. It's pretty great. I've also gotten about seven hours of sleep in the last three days, so this post might get a little ranty. Beware.

So. Sunday night I stayed up way too late packing. I managed to get everything for the semester into one big suitcase, which I am ridiculously proud of. Ihinger packing skills for the win! But since I finished most of the crazy running around late sunday night, I got to have a nice relaxing day on monday before flying out. I had a lovely dinner with my family, and my mother dropped me off at the airport around six.

Of course, my flight didn't take off until 9:45, so I had a couple of hours to wait. It was rather boring. Airports are like that. However, interestingly enough, in the international terminal they have installed iPads at all the tables, so you can mess around with those for free while waiting for your plane to get in. It was all very swanky. I used mine to check tumblr. The very nice old lady at the table next door was using hers to play an incredibly competitive game of blackjack.

Eventually my plane arrived, and we all boarded. I was also very proud of the fact that I managed to snag one of the last available window seats when I booked my ticket. The awesomeness of the window seat was a bit offset by the fact that it was two rows from the back of the plane, which meant a lot of extra waiting around. However, said waiting was made much more bearable by the addition of my seat mate, who turned out to be totally awesome. She was also an american, about my age, who was traveling to London to visit with a friend. We spent a good deal of the flight talking, and we watched a movie together, and I shared with her my peanut butter M&M's. This is quite a recommendation, as I take my peanut butter M&M's very seriously, and wouldn't share them with just anyone. So I seriously lucked out there.

Once we arrived, I made it through immigration with no troubles, parted ways with my new bosom buddy and made my way out to meet Ruth, the family friend with whom I am staying with tonight. I had a bit of a scare once I exited the terminal, as my phone would not work at all, there was no wifi, and Ruth still hadn't shown up yet. Luckily, she arrived only about 10 minutes after I did, and we managed to find each other even without phones.

But yes mom, I made it safely, and they even let me into the country! Go figure.

Ruth has been absolutely spectacular. She took me on a quick tour of the city, and pointed out most of the major sights. It was really cool to see everything in person, even though I kept falling asleep in the car in between landmarks. The jetlag has been seriously not fun. After that, we had a quiet hour or two at her house, before heading out for dinner at the local pub. I ended up having a very English dinner of a chicken pie and chips, and a Pimms to drink. It was pretty tasty.

My official first legal drink! How exciting!

So yeah, It's been a bit of an adventure getting here, but I have made it safely to London, I have been fed, and tomorrow morning I am on the train to Lancaster.

For now, I am going to bed. Goodnight all.

P.S. British pounds are SO PRETTY! NOT FAIR.

Introducing Myself

Hello random internet person!

This is a handy dandy little blog to document my travels abroad. I will be spending my fall semester in England, and in order to keep everyone at home from dying of jealousy I shall be recording my adventures and pictures here, and not on my facebook or tumblr where they have to see it every day.

So. I am leaving on Monday, in three days (and wow am I unprepared), where I will be flying into London. I'll stay the night with a family friend, and then take the train up to Lancaster the next day. And the day after that I start orientation and get to look around where I'll be spending the next couple of months.

I'm pretty excited. I mean, I have yet to start packing, plus there's that super fun international flight all by myself, so there's also a certain amount of stress and worry involved, but overall I just can't wait.

I'm sure you'll hear all about it.

Sidenote; I really really suck at regularly posting, but I swear I'll try to keep it up this time. For one thing, I know my mother will kill me if she doesn't get to read about all of my crazy shenanigans, so for her sake I'll do my best. But I apologize in advance if I only post every once in a while.

Anyways, irregular posting aside, I really hope you enjoy hearing about what I get up to, and I swear that I'll do my best to enjoy myself while I'm across the pond.

Cheers,
Fiona
